Anyone of you people remember the day when Bush led his glorious "coalition of the willing" to destroy Iraq's capability of producing weapons of mass destruction ? I sure do..
And to think about it , here's the way the deal went down in 2003 according to me;
Alright , at the very beginning you've got Iraq. A country under a mad dictator son-of-a-bitch who lost the last big attempt of enlarging his empire back in 1991. The coalition those days kicked his ass back all the way from Kuwait. He lost , and along with it his dreams of Iraq ever becoming a first-world nation with all the freakin' oil of the middle-east under it's command crumbled to the ground..
We all knew that Iraq couldn't do shit after desert storm. It had truly been given a lesson in the so-called games of international justice. Of course , some people might say that the only reason that the coalition liberated Iraq was to keep the oil flowing to the western nations instead of Iraq. I don't believe that. More like , I still like to believe in the phrase that was uttered in that movie "Three kings" , in which Mark Wahlberg states to his Iraqi torturer that , "you just can't invade another man's country without consequences".
So , everything was "pretty fine" over there in the gulf for the next few years until 2001 hit the clocks. We had 9/11 and this whole damn "global war on terrorism" was kick-started from practically zero. This is the part where it starts to divide itself into several categories;
- President Bush. Without this whole "war on terrorism" - thing starting , he would've probably stayed a very mediocre president of the united states. Now the question that I have in my mind , is if Bush along with his administration (or perhaps someone "higher") already had drawn plans for the invasion of Iraq in the up-coming years following 9/11 or was it just something that Bush had promised to do for himself (or perhaps to someone yet unidentified ?) from the very beginning.
- To me , it rather seemed that OIF (operation Iraqi freedom) was something that was planned during 2001 - 2002. Perhaps the planners in Bush's regime decided , that since the war on terrorism was going on , it would beneficial to eliminate the long thorn in their side , Iraq , at the same time or immediately following Afghanistan (operation enduring freedom) . Afterall , perhaps the CIA along with the NSA were very certain that Iraq couldn't have posed much of a risk after 1991. And , in a way , they were right. Afterall , Bush declared Iran , North-Korea , and Iraq as participants in the so-called "axis of evil" that , to me , sounded like a well-laid out "plan for the future". So , maybe Bush just told us what were the next countries in the invasion list or something. And I'm not saying that they wouldn't be real shitholes too (especially north Korea) , but somehow it seems a bit questionable that Iraq popped up as a terrible threat for the US this late in the run. I mean , shouldn't they have attacked it earlier ? Let's say , the day following Bush's inauguration as the president ? It sure sounded a bit odd when Iraq (following the operation in Afghanistan) became the biggest threat to the world's freedom since the Nazi-Germany..
- The truth was , those days , and still is , that Iraq didn't have shit against the US. Maybe they had WMD - projects going on , maybe they didn't , but any sensible dictator would've hauled his "illegal weapons" somewhere real safe when the international pressure started to fall towards an invasion. Come on , think about it , folks ! Would you just leave your illegal weapons of mass destruction laying around for the US to find out if you knew that your regime was going to be wasted anyways ? I sure as hell wouldn't leave them at their original storages. And hey , Saddam Hussein certainly had a abundant source where to stick his weapons into as well(this is the middle-east we're talking about !) . He could've hauled them to Syria , Lebanon , etc.. I'm sure there would've been elements in these countries that could've taken them for themselves and hidden them until the right time. This proves to me , that the US was either a bit too naive to think that such weapons would be in plain sight to see once the invasion campaign got rolling (come on , even a dumb bastard like me acting as a dictator would've moved the weapons elsewhere in order for the international community to blame the US for a needless invasion) , or then they really knew that no such weapons ever existed. This point leads us to one of the biggest questions of the whole damn century. Since , you know , frankly , the US had no reason to invade Iraq besides maybe the age-old "we will kill your oppressors and bring you democracy" - reason (get rid of Saddam) . The Bush administration (desperately) needed reasons and educated arguments supporting the invasion. So , they had to come up with the WMD - story. Since , I don't think that anyone over there in the Bush administration was so stupid and ignorant to just automatically assume along the grounds that "sure we're going to find WMD as long as we invade". And , if I'm wrong here and the Bush administration really based their OIF - plan on the ground I mentioned before (the "sure we're going to find weapons of mass destruction as long as we invade " - thing) then we are truly dealing with the world's dumbest regime at the moment. Therefore , to me , at least , it seems rather far-fetched that Bush would've just blindly believed in automatically finding the WMD-weapons. No , it was more than that. Someone wanted Saddam off the bosses' chair in Iraq. Of course the US couldn't have just told the international community that the up-coming civilian deaths , huge battles , troops movements , geopolitical changes and the general upheaval in Iraq was all because they wanted Iraq not to have Saddam as it's leader anymore. It would've seemed like , if Bush himself would have been fighting a personal war against Saddam. Now that couldn't have drawn much support at all for the OIF. So , still , they needed a sensible reason !! And that reason was to start scaring countries over Iraq's "supposed" weapons of mass-destruction.
- Anyone remember when Colin Powell was in the UN security council in 2003 with his "intelligence photos" over some supposed Iraqi WMD - production facilities ? I remember that one. He gave the report on Iraq's WMD-capabilities at that point too. In the report , Iraq had supposedly material and production facilities for such weapons. The US also pulled out it's most feared "trump card" , or "ace-in-the-hole" at that time. They said "Al Qaeda". Oh my god ! They said Al Qaeda in Iraq ! They said Osama Bin Laden's Al Qaeda in Iraq !! Yeah, Iraq was supposedly offering assistance in the training and support of Al-Qaeda's fighters. There were apparently some sorts of training facilities for Al-Qaeda in Iraq , according to the US officials. All of that seems a bit contradictory. Know why ? Well , apparently , it turns out that Osama Bin Laden had declared a Jihad on Saddam Hussein's ass back in 1991 due to his invasion of Kuwait. Now I know that Bin Laden is as much of a hypocritic as the proverbial "next guy" , but somehow it seems a bit odd that Al-Qaeda and Hussein's regime would've interacted especially since Osama had declared a Jihad on Hussein's worthless butt !!? See !?
- To me , it all seems like a "regime change-operation" that had to be disguised. It would've certainly looked bad if the US would have openly admitted that the idea behind OIF was just to overthrow Saddam Hussein (warmongering , many countries would've said). Perhaps the idea behind OIF was to make a regime change in Iraq so that , no matter what , Al-Qaeda and Islamic fundamentalism couldn't have taken root following Al-Qaeda's eviction from Afghanistan at the end of "Op. enduring freedom". Now , perhaps the US planners counted the whole OIF as something really easy. They figured , that since Hussein's regime had been on the rot since 1991 , it would've been easy to just "kick in the door and let the rest of the house fall behind". Now , that was true since that's how the initial phase of the operations pretty much went , but I'm sure no-one in the coalition ranks really planned for an insurgency to start in Iraq either. Let me remind you , that the Bush regime mainly sold their whole OIF - warplan as something , in which they had to stop Iraq from using WMD's against the free world. Now , perhaps when reading between the lines , you could've spotted words describing the secondary objective of overthrowing Saddam and bringing democracy to the people of Iraq... There's no doubt about it , at the beginning of 2003 , Iraq's WMD-threat was still the primary reason for the invasion by the US led coalition countries given by the media.
- The situation changed when there were very little to call as "WMD" in Iraq after the initial invasion. Infact , they didn't find much ? I remember reading about a team of Danish troops finding older Iran-Iraq war dated artillery shells with some sort of gas inside. But that was pretty much it along with a "trailer laboratory" that the US forces uncovered sometime ago. At this moment , the search for WMD's is officially over. Nothing's found. But , there's still a very interesting aspect on this; When it become apparent that the coalition wasn't going to find much of WMD's from Iraq , the Bush administration cleverly changed their "marketing speech" from WMD-search to the overthrowing of Saddam. "Hey , this war was about bringing democracy to the people Iraq , first of all !!" , they proclaimed.. See how the reasons cleverly changed according to political situation ? All of a sudden it wasn't about the WMD's anymore.. And they were "so" dead certain in the beginning that such devastating weapons were in Saddam's hands and target coordinates already laid out for every major American city..
